Indie authors are (not) real writers

Can you earn from writing? That is a basic question many people will ask, when they hear about indie author.

You are publishing in Amazon, your covers are self-made, you are hiring an editor or editing by yourself and you are promoting by yourself.

Traditional publishing demands only to write a book and submit it to your publisher. If you have  publishers, editing, covers, formatting and promoting are their thing.

Being a traditional published once, gave me next impressions:

If you are not well known author, your sale will be low.

If you are publishing in a small country, like mine (Croatia), your sale will be low.

If you are writing in genre that is not popular in your country, your sale will be low.

If you are not a member of some author's community or association, your sale will be low.

That makes me question: where is a difference between traditional publishing and indie authors?

Only amateur will say about how indie authors are not real writers. We are also investing our money in promotion, covers, editing, to make our product the best we can.

You are not earning a lot, but you get an opportunity to offer your book aboard, which was not a chance before Amazon appeared.

When I was 16, only class mates could read my stories in notebook. Now is a big advantage to offer your ideas around the globe and hope someone will notice you.

Remember, if you support traditional publishing, there are some traditional authors that are not worthy of attention. They simply had a luck to find an agent to represent them.

In the moment I have 321 ratings on Goodreads and I am happy that my reviews are objective, because people have a different perceptions about my books.

In six years of my writing , I progressed and made some changes. I am striving for the better, and readers are a part of my success.

Writing is a joy for every sincere author. If you write only to get money, you are not passionate author. That urge has to be inside of you, to share your ideas with the world. Money come later as a bonus. If your book could be a solution, a message for someone to change their lives, your intention is right one.

Swapping books - a devil's deal

"I will read your book if you read and review mine." This is an example of author's deal when it comes time for reviews. Reviews is hard to get. If you sell books, it is still not guarantee you will get reviews. If I could get a review for every book I sold, it would be great. People will buy book to collect it on the shelves and leave it un-read. Or, they will read but not rate it. Many reasons are for not getting reviews, but some people don't know where and how to write reviews or are not eligible. That is the reason why authors will turn to other authors, with a proposition for review. The danger of such review is on Amazon rules: author can't review other's author books on request. I love to read indie authors and they inspire me, but I have my circle and I never accept offers to read someone I never heard about. Once I got a proposition :" Hey, I saw your review for XX author, can you write it for me, too?" I ignored it. When you have a deal ...
