Indie authors are (not) real writers

Can you earn from writing? That is a basic question many people will ask, when they hear about indie author. You are publishing in Amazon, your covers are self-made, you are hiring an editor or editing by yourself and you are promoting by yourself.  Traditional publishing demands only to write a book and submit it to your publisher. If you have  publishers, editing, covers, formatting and promoting are their thing. Being a traditional published once, gave me next impressions: If you are not well known author, your sale will be low. If you are publishing in a small country, like mine (Croatia), your sale will be low. If you are writing in genre that is not popular in your country, your sale will be low. If you are not a member of some author's community or association, your sale will be low. That makes me question: where is a difference between traditional publishing and indie authors? Only amateur will say about how indie authors are not real writers. We are also investing ou...

You can't learn how to write books

A few times I got a request to show someone how to write books. I should explain to someone the writing process, but without a fee. It should be voluntary work to inform someone how to write a book. The Internet is full of selfish people. Even if someone tries to hide their personality, it will pop up with their actions. Do you expect something from strangers, not offering anything to return? The root of writing is inspiration. There is no pattern in how to write. This is a feeling you wear inside, and an inside voice that leads you to throw words on the paper. Some will attend workshops or pay money to learn the basics of writing, but writing without passion is like a song without music. Hemingway had a lot of typing errors but his work was a masterpiece.  Today is a problem that everyone thinks he can write a bestseller. A successful writer is one who has reached the audience. The Internet wi...

How to deal with writer's block?

If you are a writer, you know what I am talking about. Some days you have an invisible obstacle in your mind, feels like a frozen stick inside and you don't know how to start. What to write and how to get out from the blockade? Writer's block could manifest in various forms: You can't start the book. You are stuck in the middle of the book. You don't know how to end the book. You are repeating yourself, this idea is already written.  How do I deal with writer's block? I use my memories from real life. I can't mistake it there, my life already told the story. I read books. I will not copy anyone, but others' books can develop the seed of an idea.  I take a break. Going out in the fresh air helps. You might meet someone who will inspire you. What motivates me?  My best writing period happens when I got angry. My words are flowing then, like someone talking to me about exactly what I should write.  Critics are the wind in my back. Let me show to assholes what I...
